LOWER IT GOES: Egg prices have crashed to a low never seen in the last few years. - File photo
Coimbatore , Feb. 27
The distress caused by the loss of market for the poultry sector was further pronounced today with both the layer egg and broiler sectors slashing the wholesale price further. The Namakkal-based National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) had announced another 45 per cent cut in the farm-gate price of table eggs from 90 paise a piece to 50 paise in its meeting on Monday. On the other hand, the broiler coordination committee (BCC) sliced the procurement rate by another 16 per cent to bring it to Rs 15 per kg from Sunday's Rs18 in the face of continued barren market.Within a week of reports of avian influenza hitting the country, broiler prices have crashed from Rs 38 a kg. Both shell egg and chicken producers are grimly battling piling of stocks in the face of continued consumer resistance to the poultry consumption.
