Metro Rail not enough

Mr Sudhir Badami, transport consultant: The allocation of Rs 4,595 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission should be for a more comprehensive Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transit System and not just the Metro Rail Project. As Skybus and High Capacity Bus System (HCBS) are more viable and less expensive alternatives, Metro Rail Project should be kept in abeyance for a future date. The complete Mumbai Metro Master Plan, taking into consideration the cost escalation, could take up to Rs 35,000 crore and 16 years. Alternatives such as Skybus and HCBS System would barely cost Rs 6,000 crore and five years to complete. This holds good for all metros.
