ITI bags order from Alcatel

Our Bureau

To supply 300 base stations

New Delhi , March 1

Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) has bagged its first major contract to manufacture GSM based cellular equipment for the export market.

The order, given by French major Alcatel, involves supply of 300 base stations (BTS) as a part of two million lines GSM network.

This order is part of the agreement entered between ITI and Alcatel to set up an indigenous manufacturing capacity in India and outsource its requirement for growing export markets.

"It was envisaged that the manufacturing of BTS equipment will be taken up by ITI under technology transfer from its long standing collaborator - Alcatel. Following this agreement, ITI, for the first time in India, set up a manufacturing facility for BTS at Mankapur, which was dedicated to the Nation during July last year by Chairperson of UPA in the presence of Minister for Communications and IT," said a press statement.

ITI had initially established a GSM network of one million lines capacity in the West Zone for state-owned BSNL covering Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh Circles. BSNL placed an additional order for three million lines.

"Expecting a large volume for GSM Project in view of the fact that BSNL is adding several million lines per year for its GSM network, ITI decided to establish one more facility at its plant in Rae Bareli.

This was a part of revival strategy for the Rae Bareli Plant. ITI has so far supplied about 2,000 units of BTS to BSNL," said the release.

The Alcatel order could lead to more contracts since the French company has a requirement of five million lines.
