CGH Earth group opens up new vistas for artists

C.J. Punnathara

Kochi , March 3

From the tranquil backwaters of Kerala to the architecturally rich city of Swabish Hall in Germany and beyond, the CGH Earth group of hotels has opened up a global canvas for artists and painters from India.

"The move to open up national and international vistas to the artists should not be perceived as a purely commercial venture, but as a platform for artists to showcase their work to a global audience. In the process we will be promoting and reinforcing the brand image CGH Earth group of hotels as a clean, green, environment friendly chain, with a commitment to the traditional art and culture," Mr Jose Dominic, Managing Director of the group, said.

Around 180 paintings were produced by 70 artists through a series of four art camps held at CGH properties - in the idyllic settings of backwaters, sea coast and undulating hills and mountains. The result was a rich tapestry of abstract, realistic, traditional and postmodernist canvases.

While the digital version of the exhibition can now be accessed across the world at www.cghearthgallery.com, the paintings in their physical form will soon be on display at major Indian cities such as Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkota. Around 60 canvasses, including mural paintings from Kerala, will be shipped to Germany to adorn the walls of the CGH Earth International's headquarters at Swabish Hall.

CGH Earth International is a joint venture between CGH Earth India with 76 per cent stake and Mr Rudolf Buhler of Germany, who holds 24 per cent. The relationship between Mr Buhler and CGH Earth emanates from the rich spice-growing region of Thekkady. The organic pepper and other spices produced by the Mannan and Puliya tribes are procured by the CGH Earth group, exported to Germany, and marketed to the discerning consumers of Europe.

Now the relationship has blossomed out further and CGH Earth international has taken a historical building on lease from the city council, renovated it and is furnishing it in Indian style, to showcase Indian heritage, culture, cuisine and art. The paintings of Indian artists will be housed here, making occasional forays to the art galleries of France, Switzerland and other European cities.
