Landmark's new store in Chennai

Our Bureau

Chennai, March 3

Landmark, the books and music store, inaugurated its branch in Chennai Citi Centre, the new mall on Radhakrishnan Salai here today. Mr Jayasankar Subramaniam, a spokesman of Landmark said that the store is over 20,000 sq ft, and is the company's fourth store in Chennai. The company also has a store in Bangalore, and one in Kolkata held on a joint venture basis. Mr Subramaniam said that another six stores are being planned over the next one year, in all the metros and in Pune and Baroda.

All the stores would focus on their core competency, which is in books and music, he said.

Currently, the Bangalore store experiences a footfall of 3,000 to 5,000 a day on average he said, while the store in Spencer Plaza, Chennai, has a footfall of about 5,000 a day and 15,000 on weekends. He expects that the store in Chennai Citi Centre will have a footfall well in excess of that because it is located in a catchment area right by the beach.

He said that the new store has not expanded into any new verticals — the existing verticals include books, music, stationery, office utilities, gift articles, music and crystal. It would also have a section exclusively for kids. An investment of Rs 4.4 crore has gone into the store, which is held on lease.

Trent Ltd, a Tata group company, has a 76 per cent stake in Landmark.
