The Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Murli Deora, on Friday kicked off the first promotional road show on the third offer of coal-bed methane (CBM-III). Speaking on the occasion, Mr Deora said, the Government has offered 10 CBM blocks under the third round.
"Based on exploration work carried out so far, results in some of the CBM blocks have exceeded our expectations and three operators have established in-place gas reserves of over 6 trillion cubic feet (TCF)," he said.
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Reliance Industries and Great Eastern Energy Corp have discovered over 6 TCF of gas reserves below the coal seams.
"More ongoing exploration efforts would establish more CBM reserves", he added.
The Government has formulated the CBM Policy to harness the gas lying below coal seams, he said. The Government has so far offered 16 CBM blocks for exploration.
"The first commercial production of CBM in the country is expected to commence in 2007," he said.
CBM-III round of bidding was launched on February 23 to supplement natural gas production. CBM-III offers 10 blocks two each in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and one each in Jharkhand and West Bengal.
