Bangalore , March 3

AstraZeneca announced it has acquired Eli Lilly's anti-infective brand - Vancocin CP - for India and Nepal markets. The deal amount was not disclosed.

Vancocin CP or Vancomycin is widely used in treating resistant bugs in the ICUs. The brand has been promoted in the country by Eli Lilly since 1994 and enjoys 54 per cent market share. AstraZeneca's release said it complements its flagship antibiotic - Meronem, which commands 52 per cent market share.

The Managing Director of AstraZeneca Pharma India, Mr Bhasker Iyer, said, "AstraZeneca already has a strong presence in the ICU set-up with Meronem. Vancocin CP, with its strong brand equity and leadership position in the Indian market, is a perfect fit and will enhance and further strengthen our existing portfolio."

Eli Lilly India Medical Director, Dr Vinod Mattoo, said, "This is part of our global strategy to divest from products that do not fit into our key therapeutical areas. Vancocin CP is one such product."
