Linux biz set to grow 26 pc a year: IDC

Linux is expanding into new markets. It has found its way into business-oriented solutions in storage and server markets in Asia-Pacific.

It is now emerging on data/content servers and is growing at a scorching pace in the APAC region, said Mr Rick Sewell, Linux Business Development Manager, Hewlett Packard in Asia-Pacific and Japan, at a recent international storage conference in Malaysia.

According to International Data Corporation, the worldwide Linux business is expected to grow 25.9 per cent annually, doubling from $20 billion in 2005 to more than $40 billion in 2008.

Microsoft owns 70 per cent of the market share in operating systems. Linux, only owns 8-10 per cent. But Mr Sewell predicted that by 2010-11, Linux would own up to 40 per cent of the market share. Linux-based servers are growing at 35 per cent in the APAC region, Windows' at 12 per cent and Unix is not growing at all, he said.
