Cold chain is hot

Cold chain logistics hold out lucrative business opportunities, according industry experts. The volume of temperature-sensitive high-value products being shipped by air is steadily increasing. As competition reduces supply-chain lead times and product life-cycles, and regulatory bodies become stricter, the shippers of these products, particularly those in the pharmaceuticals industry, are prepared to cough up extra money for quality.

According to one estimate, the market for temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products for shipment by air is estimated to grow at at least 15 per cent annually, for the next 10 years. The optimism is based on the fact that nearly 400 temperature-sensitive biotechnology products are now in various stages of clinical trial.

Similar opportunities exist in the food industry, driven partially by consumer preference for out-of-season fruits and vegetables in select markets. No wonder, many of the world's top airlines, logistics service providers and express cargo carriers are offering tailor-made packages for transportation of cold chain products.
