Mumbai , March 5 The Maharashtra Government on Friday launched the Mithi River development project in Mumbai. The project brief is to dredge, clean and remove illegal encroachments such as houses and commercial units from the riverbank. The project, costing Rs 130 crore, would be completed in two phases. The first phase would be completed by June 2006 and second phase by June 2007. Mithi river was the main water body responsible for the July 26 2005, Mumbai floods. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) would be the project implementation authority. It plans to undertake widening of the river channel, dredging of the riverbed, removal of encroachments along the riverbanks, checking effluent discharge and construction of public toilets. It will also take up rehabilitation of people displaced by the project. Mithi river is a confluence of tail water discharges of Powai and Vihar lakes. It originates at Powai and meets the Arabian Sea at Mahim Creek and it flows through residential and industrial complexes of Powai, Saki Naka, Kurla and Mahim covering span of about 15 km. The city citizens discharge raw sewage, industrial waste and garbage in the river. Moreover, illegal activities such as washing of oily drums, discharge of unauthorised hazardous waste are also carried out along the course of the river. Currently, thousands of slum-dwellers live on the riverbanks.
