Many succeed `due to commitment and many fail as they look for comfort'

NEW RELEASE: Ms Kalpana Ganesh, GM, MMA, Chennai, Mr S. Krishnamurthy, Director, Alphabetic Inc, Mr R. Mohandas, GM, Personnel, MFL, and Dr Ishari K. Ganesh, Founder Chairman, Vel's Group of Institutions, at the release of VIBA's placement brochure.

Chennai , March 5

"You are what you think you are" and "no one can make you feel inferior without your permission," said Mr S. Krishnamoorthy, Director, Alphabetic Inc, Chennai, to the students of Vel's Institute of Business Administration at a function held under the aegis of BL Club to release their placement brochure release function.

Quoting the Upanishads, he said, "By controlling our mind, we can control the universe." Elaborating on the topic of his talk, `Self-confidence - a mantra for progress,' he added that "many succeed because of commitment and many fail because they look for comfort."

Travails on the path

On the travails of the path to career success, he said, "Success takes more than intellectual excellence or technical prowess, that needs a sort of skill to survive - and certainly to thrive with the internal qualities such as resilience, initiative, optimism and adaptability."

Enthusiasm can create history. To illustrate this, he narrated the historical incident where a young boy, unable to digest that his side was losing the soccer match, ran into the field, grabbed the ball and ran to the goalpost with it. Thus rugby was born.

People do not know about their potential, he challenged.

He quoted Dr William James, Dean of the American Society of Psychologists, as saying that the average human being uses only 7 per cent of his brain's potential. And average humans, according to Dr James, are Isaac Newton and Thomas Alva Edison. HR is considered the biggest asset of the industry - how to train, motivate and retain employees is the current emphasis in the industry, said Mr R. Mohandas, General Manager (Personnel & Administration), Madras Fertilizers, Chennai.

Positive attitude

Elaborating on the topic, `positive attitude - the key to success,' he said, "attitude is a small thing which makes a big difference." He added that the "success of an organisation basically depends on its employees, not doing different things, but doing things differently."

"Fate is what you meet, destiny is how you meet," were the words of Ms Kalpana Ganesh, General Manager (Education & Development), Madras Management Association, Chennai. She was speaking on `campus to corporate' to the VIBA students.

Elaborating further, Ms Ganesh added that corporates expect the following traits in management graduates: Ability to work in a team, analytical and problem solving skills, communication and other soft skills, creativity and resourcefulness, leadership potential, general managerial skills and entrepreneurial skills.
