Hyderabad , March 5

THE Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd has registered a net profit of Rs 1.85 crore on a turnover of Rs 38 crore by February end as against a net profit of Rs 1.45 crore on a turnover of Rs 28 crore in the same period last year.

The corporation has set a target of Rs 38 crore for the whole financial year as against the turnover of Rs 36.18 crore in 2004-05.

Sales exhibitions alone contributed Rs 9.50 crore so far this year as against Rs 6.36 crore last year, a press release said.

The corporation, which had taken up a project to revamp its sales emporia in order to attract more customers, has lined up Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Tirumala for renovation.

The corporation had conducted a survey in order to assess areas of intervention needed for the overall development of crafts in an integrated manner. Following the results, it plans to organise five skill upgrading programmes on Banjara embroidery, Nirmal paintings, silver filigree, Bobbili veenas and brass metalware this year.

"This will help the artisans develop new designs and quality products in tune with the current market needs," it said.

The corporation would set up a multi-craft common facility service centre at Hyderabad and Bobbili in Vizianagaram district.
