SETTING NEW RECORDS: A view of a rubber processing unit near Kochi in Kerala. Rubber farmers in the country are having a continued spell of good luck with prices reaching an all-time high due to the wide gap between production and consumption.

Rubber production is expected to touch a record 7.83 lakh tonnes in the current fiscal, up 4.5 per cent. The output during April 2005 - January 2006 was 7 lt against 6.69 lt in the same period last year. The domestic consumption stands at 6.64 lt till January and is estimated to reach 7.97 lt. Exports are also likely to improve with 57,166 tonnes exported till February.
