BSNL-MTNL plan undersea cable link

Our Bureau

New Delhi, March 6

State-owned telecom majors Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar telephone Nigam Ltd are planning to lay a Rs 1,800 crore undersea cable between India and Singapore.

This will be BSNL second undersea cable after the India-Sri Lanka link.

The company is also looking to connect West Asian countries in a bid to set up its own international long distance network.

The Minister of State for Communications and IT, Mr Shakeel Ahmad, told the Rajya Sabha, in a written reply, that the preliminary indications were that the project would be profitable.

Though BSNL has launched its ILD services, it is still routing its traffic through other operators including VSNL and Bharti.

Bharti Infotel and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd already have India-Singapore cable through four cable systems in South East Asia, West Asia, Western Europe and Tata India Singapore Cable Systems.

Indian operators now control more than a third of the global undersea cable systems in the world with VSNL being among the top three.

The Tata-managed VSNL had recently acquired two major cable systems including Tyco and Teleglobe taking it to the big league of bandwidth owners.
