Scotch Whisky body seeks duty cut

Our Bureau

New Delhi, March 7

The Edinburgh-based Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has expressed disappointment with no measures being taken to reduce duties on imported spirits in the Budget. According to the association, market access to India for Scotch whisky and other imported spirits continues to be unfairly restricted by a discriminatory fiscal regime, which is contrary to international trade rules.

The overall duty burden faced by Scotch whisky currently ranges from 212 per cent to 525 per cent. "It is disappointing that India has failed for the second year in a row to take any steps to align its discriminatory import and domestic tax regime for spirits with WTO rules," said Mr Peter Wilkinson, International Affairs Director of SWA.

The association has also hinted that if the "discriminatory" tariffs continue, it may press for this issue to be raised at the WTO.
