Toyota Kirloskar workers defer strike plan

Our Bureau

Bangalore , March 7

Toyota Kirloskar Motor workers have put on hold their plans to go on strike from March 23 as the Labour Commissioner has initiated conciliatory talks between the management and the workers.

A workers' union representative told Business Line that a round of talks was held on Monday and the next is slated for March 20.

"We will decide on the strike based on the outcome of the conciliatory talks with the management of Toyota Kirloskar Motor," he said.

CM to resolve issue

The workers have also received a boost with the Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy, assuring a delegation of the union that he will hold talks with the management to resolve the issue. The union members on Tuesday presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister seeking his intervention to resolve the issue. The memorandum said the company should take back three dismissed employees and lift suspension on 27 workers.

The union had given a notice to the management in February stating that the workers will go on strike from March 23. The workers went on strike on January 6 and subsequently the management declared a lockout fearing violence inside the factory. The Government also declared the strike by the workers as illegal. The company has 1,550 workers who are all part of the union.

The management had also claimed that the January 6 strike was illegal as the union had not given 14 days notice as per the Industrial Disputes Act since the company has been notified as a public utility service by the State Government.
