New Delhi , March 7

The five-day strike by employees of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) earlier this year caused a financial loss of more than Rs 2.64 crore to the airline industry apart from leading to cancellation of flights, the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel has said.

The Minister told the Rajya Sabha that while Jet Airways suffered a loss of up to Rs 60 lakh, Air Sahara suffered a loss of up to Rs 39.75 lakh, while the loss suffered by Air Deccan is about Rs 1 crore.

Kingfisher Airlines suffered a loss of up to Rs 45 lakh and Spice Jet suffered a loss of up to Rs 20 lakh, Mr Patel said and added that information was being collected from Indian Airlines and Air India about the losses suffered by the two airlines.

The strike, however, did not cause any loss to AAI, Mr Patel said. The Airports Authority Employees Union/AAI Joint Forum organised agitation and resorted to protest rallies against the move of the Government to modernise the airports at Delhi and Mumbai through the joint venture route. The strike started on January 30 and ended on February 3 this year.
