Agri-Biz & Commodities - Oilseeds & Edible Oil

Oilseeds body to showcase India in global food expo

Mumbai , March 8

, The Indian Oilseeds & Produce Exporters' Association (IOPEA) is participating at the 31st International Food & Beverages Exhibition (Foodex) 2006 being held in Tokyo during March 14-17.

The association strongly feels the need to participate to have interaction on a one-to-one basis with Japanese importers, their associations and Government officials to remove prejudices they have about Indian products. It also wants to showcase India's improvement over the years, latest production facilities and stringent measures taken to meet Japanese trade requirements, according to a release issued by IOPEA.

Eyes Japan for sesame

"Our quality, large crop and competitive prices on a year-on-year basis should help us persuade Japanese buyers to resume imports. Japan's traditional sesame seed supplier, China has now turned net importer and imports substantial quantities from India," an official said.

India has emerged as the largest exporter of sesame seed with export of 1.8 lakh tonnes accounting for about 25 per cent of the world sesame seed trade.

Since sesame seed is grown in various States in different climatic conditions, India is in a unique position to offer a whole range — white, yellow, brown, black, etc. Indian seed has gained large market share in demanding markets such as Europe and the US.

Despite this, India has no presence in Japan — the largest buyer of sesame seeds, which imports about 1.6 lakh tonnes and accounts for about 20 per cent of the world trade.
