Grooming women as tourist guides

Or Bureau

Hyderabad , March 8

Marking International Women's Day, Indiatourism has announced an exclusive scheme for women that seeks to make them quality guides.

After completion of the scheme, the women would get the `certified guide' tag that would give them licence to be `freelance approved guides' in the Southern region.

Making the scheme accessible to large numbers, the Ministry is allowing women between 20 and 65 years to seek admission into the programme.

"Keeping in mind the increasing numbers in tourist inflows, both domestic and foreign, we would like to evolve a base of qualified guides. While helping the women to get livelihood, the scheme would help the tourism and hospitality sectors to offer value-added services to the visiting tourists," a senior Union Ministry of Tourism official told Business Line.

The Ministry has advertised the scheme inviting women candidates for a written test.

The successful candidates would be taken in for a four-month course in Chennai.

The programme included six weeks of classroom training and 10 weeks of practical training.

At a later stage, these would be offered in other Southern States as well, the official said.
