Oxford needs more students

Our Bureau

Bangalore, March 8

The world's most revered learning centre needs more Indians. The Oxford University Chancellor, Lord Chris Patten, who's currently touring the country, feels Oxford does not attract enough Indians. Currently there are 540 Chinese students and just 200 Indians on the campus. "We will have a sustained policy on India and increase Indian studies," he says. But why this focus on India and its talent pool? Lord Patten responds, "India will shape the 21st century and you have a great talent pool." On the issue of discrimination, he says it's a thing of the past. "Indian doctors are virtually running the UK's NHS (National Health Service)."
