Kochi tops in vacuum packaged tea sales

Coimbatore , March 9

The tea auction centre in Kochi beat Coimbatore in presenting vacuum-packaged tea with Waterfall Estates (East) Private Ltd introducing it in October last. Six months later, the group's second factory — Waterfall Estates (West) Private Ltd — followed suit by introducing it at the weekly auction here on Wednesday. It is to be rolled out in Coonoor on March 10.

Contemporary Tea Auctioneers Pvt Ltd sold the vacuum-packaged tea on behalf of Waterfall Estates. The rate surpassed the broker's expectation of Rs 70 a kg to touch a high of Rs 74 for the dust grade.

Coimbatore auction

The auction was advanced to Wednesday this week to enable the Trade Association to organise the National Tea Convention on South Indian Teas on March 11 and 12. Market sources said that the prices dipped by Rs 2-3 a kg for the third consecutive week, but expected it to look up in the coming weeks. Quality teas however commanded better rates. Exporters continued to stay away.
