Railways JM Baxi to roll out container train in June Santanu Sanyal
Kolkata , March 9 Come June and the JM Baxi Group will roll out its container train as per the new scheme unveiled by the Railway Ministry. "We propose to cover several ports and have initially targeted Visakhapatnam, Chennai and Mundra," a spokesman for the Group told Business Line. The operation will initially be run with rakes acquired on lease from the Container Corporation of India (Concor), he said. The number of rakes to be acquired will depend on the cargo inducement.
Own rakes by year-end
Towards the end of the year, the Group hopes to see its own rakes join the services. "We have placed orders with a West Bengal-based wagon manufacturer for 12 rakes, each with 45 flats at a total cost of Rs 155 crore and the first batch of two rakes will arrive some time in November/ December," the spokesman said, adding that the Group also plans to set up inland container depots (ICDs), initially two, one near Delhi and the other at Nagpur, and a few more, three in Gujarat and at least one in Andhra Pradesh, subsequently. The ICDs are expected to cost another Rs 170 crore to Rs 180 crore.
Cover six ports
The JM Baxi Group's proposed container train services from any part of the country will cover six ports, three on the east coast namely, Visakhapatnam, Ennore and Chennai and three on the west, Kochi, Mundra and Pipavav. The Group proposes to float in due course a separate subsidiary, Boxtrans, to run the services. As many as 14 private firms, including a few foreign but in partnership with local firms, have been given permission by the Railway Ministry to operate container trains.
