Mangalore , March 9

Metro Cash & Carry India Pvt Ltd has come together with the Karnataka Government to improve fisheries infrastructure in the State.

In this regard, the company has taken up a project to build a modern fish auction centre in Mangalore.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the building of the auction centre at Old Mangalore Port on Thursday, Mr Michael Keelan, Director (Buying and Merchandising - Food) of Metro Cash & Carry India, said that the company would build the fish auction centre at a cost of Rs 57 lakh.

After completion, the auction centre would be handed over to the Department of Fisheries.

The centre will help improve hygiene and reduce wastages, he said.

The modern facilities at the centre will help in maintaining the quality and extending the shelf life of fish catch. This will improve the profitability for fishermen.

The centre would be ready by June, Mr Keelan said.

Metro Cash & Carry has built two such auction centres in Tamil Nadu. Last year, Metro Cash & Carry had sponsored a training programme for 239 fishing crewmembers in Mangalore, Malpe and Tadadi in coastal Karnataka.

Stating that the ongoing programme covers post-harvest management of fish and topics on responsible and sustainable fishing practices, he said, "Nearly 900 fishing crew members from 17 fish trading centres in four States are expected to benefit from this programme."

It may be mentioned here that the company is sourcing fishes for its distribution centres from various fish-landing centres in west and east coasts. Mangalore is one among them.

Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty, Karnataka Minister for Fisheries and Horticulture, laid the foundation stone for the fish auction centre.

He said that modern infrastructure projects are the way of future.

He commended Metro's initiative for improving fisheries infrastructure in Karnataka.

Stating that he is aware of the problems being faced by fishermen in coastal areas, Mr Shetty said the Government is planning to come out with a special package for fishermen.

This may happen in the in the coming Budget.
