The proposed uranium mining and refinery project of the Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL) in the Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh continues to be a subject of debate and concern with the issue echoing in the State Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
The permission accorded to the Corporation faced stiff opposition from members of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India, Telugu Desam Party, CPI (M), TRS and MIM.
The Opposition parties expressed fears that the plant planned near Lambapur-Peddagattu would lead to contamination of drinking water supplied from the Nagarajunasagar project.
GOVT DRAWS FLAK
The State Government drew flak for forwarding the UCIL proposal to the Centre when people at the public hearing had unanimously opposed the project. They contended that the residents of the twin cities were at risk, as they would receive contaminated water from Nagarajunsagar, which has become a key source of water.
The State Mines and Geology Minister, Ms P. Sabita Reddy, informed the members that the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board did not issue consent to the project as its location was in the catchment area of Nagarjunasagar.
