Industry & Economy - Climate & Weather Cyclonic circulation over Gujarat Vinson Kurian
Thiruvananthapuram , March 9 After Haryana, the invading westerly trough opened a second front in the form of an induced cyclonic circulation over Gujarat and adjoining South Rajasthan on Thursday. A deep North-South trough links the parent system and the sibling, which is dictating weather in North-West and West India, said Dr Akhilesh Gupta of the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF). Thunderstorms with squally winds and isolated hailstorm will now extend to a much larger area. As has already been indicated, the zone of rainfall activity is expected to shift progressively eastward to Central and North-East India over the next four days. The evolving weather features will also cause the existing pre-monsoon thunderstorms over Central India to grow in vertical extent and produce more widespread rain over North Peninsular India. Dr Gupta did not rule out the possibility of more cyclonic circulations being induced, as the moisture feed from the westerly system fuelled convective activity in the already fertile air further east over Central India. The NCMRWF is keeping a tab on the weather as thunderstorms headed into the east.
Wet Holi
North and North-West India could possibly look forward to a wet Holi festival on March 15, Dr Gupta said. Mild showers are expected to buffet Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Western Uttar Pradesh, giving a "high" to the festival of colours, he told Business Line. Meanwhile, forecast for the next 2-3 days suggests that scattered to fairly widespread rainfall activity is likely over the plains of North-West and North India, Central India, Gujarat, Maharashtra, South Rajasthan, and the Eastern parts of the country. The rain belt is expected to move into North and Central India on Thursday and Friday, and East and North-East India on Friday and Saturday.
