Government extends Budget session till March 22

Rescheduled Finance Bill to be passed by March 20. LS to meet again on May 10 after recess. Railway Budget discussion on March 11.

New Delhi , March 9

The Lok Sabha would consider and pass the Finance Bill 2006 by March 20, completing the passage of the Union Budget 2006-07 much ahead of the usual schedule.

According to the bulletin issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat here, the current session, which was to end on March 17, has now been extended to March 22. After the inter-session recess, the Lok Sabha would again meet on May 10. This meant that the normal inter-session period, intended to let the members scrutinise the various demands for grants of the Ministries and departments, would not be there now, as the guillotining of the outstanding demands for grants would be carried on March 17.

On March 18, the Lok Sabha would sit to consider and pass the Finance Bill by Monday (March 20). Four days (March 11, 13, 14 and 17) are being devoted by the Lower House for discussion and voting on demands for grants of a few ministries/departments, which are to be selected by the Business Advisory Committee.

The general discussion on the Union Budget for 2006-07, which began on March 7, would continue till Friday, at the end of which the Finance Minister would respond to the concerns voiced by members during the discussion.

Meanwhile, the Railway Budget would be taken up for discussion and passage by the Lok Sabha on March 11.

The rescheduling of the Budget session was decided at a meeting of the Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr Somnath Chatterjee, with the leaders of parties in the Lower House held here on Wednesday.
