Kolkata , March 9 The Eastern India Renewable Energy Summit 2006 will be held here on Friday amid demands for consolidated efforts from industry and business to tap the great potential of renewable energy in the country. Being jointly organised by the India Energy Forum and the Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI), the theme of the summit is: "Doubling the capacity by 2010 - The roadmap and new issues". Among those who will deliberate at the summit include Mr V. Subramanian, Secretary in the Union Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Government of India, Mr S.P. Gon Chaudhuri, Director of West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency, Mr Sashi Kumar, Chairman & Managing Director of Coal India Ltd, and Mr P.S. Bami, President of India Energy Forum, which is a body that is recognised by the Planning Commission. Addressing a news conference here on Thursday , Mr Bami said India is ranked fourth in the global renewable energy arena. With eight per cent of the global fossil reserves, India had great potential to step up its production of renewable energy. Indigenous technology had also been developed for harnessing wind energy and a lot more could be done on this score. Mr Bami said that while renewable energy currently accounts for barely three per cent of India's total energy production, in absolute terms, the production of renewable energy was expected to go up to 25,000 MW by 2012. At present, the country's production of renewable energy stands at 4,000 MW, he said.
