People Biocon chief tops poll of biotech personalities outside US, Europe Our Bureau
Ms Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, CMD, Biocon Ltd.
Bangalore , March 7 Biocon's chief, Ms Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, has been adjudged the "most influential" person in bio-business outside the US and Europe, according to an international poll conducted by the Nature Biotechnology journal. She figures in a list of winners from seven other categories including Mr Bill gates and his wife, Ms Melinda Gates, Mr Dan Vassella of drug major Novartis, and Mr Arthur Levinson of biotech company Genentech, according to a Biocon release. "Curiously, the winner of the `Bio-business in the rest of the world' category (Ms Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw) seems to be more popular on the global scene than she actually is at home," the journal said. Ms Mazumdar-Shaw was among the 291 nominees for an online poll that the journal conducted in January this year. "I consider this international acknowledgement a recognition of the potential and promise that biotechnology holds for our country," she said. Last year Ms Mazumdar-Shaw entered the Fortune list of the 50 most powerful women in international business. A recent magazine survey declared her one of the most powerful women in Indian business, the release said.
