Redesign cost to go up by Rs 400 cr

Bangalore , March 10

The board of Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) has more or less agreed on a modified and expanded phase 1 that could be 28 per cent above the Rs 1,411-crore project, according to official sources.

Friday's tentatively approved expansion plan will push up the project cost by around Rs 400 crore, Mr Albert Brunner, CEO of the special purpose BIAL, confirmed to Business Line.

The promoter equity and State support (Rs 350 crore) would be unchanged, while BIAL would seek to increase its debt raised through the ICICI-led consortium.

Sources said a core team will go over the aspects later this month before the proposal is finally cleared.

The team would include officials from the State Government, BIAL and the Airports Authority of India.

The plan now would entail up to 35 per cent more terminal area, peak hourly handling capacity of 27 aircraft (earlier 20); larger and improved apron area with accommodation of up to 30 aircraft (earlier 13); and a much bigger car park.

The promoters are trying to keep the opening date of April 2008 and retain as much of existing works within the main contracts awarded already, officials said. The cost of additional equipment required alone could be Rs 370 crore.
