Outlook Variety - Entertainment & Leisure Xenitis Group's Kolkata TV all set for launch Our Bureau
Kolkata , March 10 Kolkata TV, the "global Bengali infotainment channel" of the Xenitis Group, is set for a mega launch on March 27, 2006. The initiative from the makers of the `Aamar' range of personal computers, will "strive to satiate the curiosity of Bengali viewers across the globe with real-time updates on politics, business, art & culture, education, sports and entertainment", a company spokesperson said here.
Rs 100-crore investment
Late last year, the Chairman of the Xenitis Group, Mr Santanu Ghosh, had announced that the free-to-air channel would be launched under the banner of SST Media Pvt Ltd, a group company. To begin with, an investment of Rs 100-crore has been earmarked for the group's satellite television venture.
`Ultimate, global content'
Mr Ghosh maintains that the channel would offer viewers the "ultimate TV content in terms of news, current affairs and infotainment". The project would be funded by promoters of the company and a consortium of banks. According to Mr Suman Chattopadhyay, Director & Chief Editor of Kolkata TV, while the channel would be a Bengali one, its content would be "global". Kolkata TV would focus on providing a "new experience in information and entertainment that will create milestones in the electronic media". Eminent filmmaker Ms Aparna Sen is to be the Creative Director of Kolkata TV and will oversee the "look and feel" of the channel. Xenitis, which clocked a turnover of Rs 178 crore in 2004-05, hopes to generate a turnover of over Rs 600 crore in the current fiscal. The group has formed a joint venture with Guangzhau Motors Group Company of China to manufacture two-wheelers here in West Bengal. The group also has plans to get into the print media at a later date, according to Mr Ghosh.
