Cars Info-Tech - Hardware Logistics - Trends Jostling for GPS space Preethi J
Bangalore , March 10 Global positioning system (GPS) devices will be unleashed on Indians this year as both international and local companies compete to grab a piece of the Rs 100 crore ($1 billion) market here. Prices will range from an affordable Rs 10,000 to a lakh! With a GPS-enabled gadget, you can receive your exact location in terms of longitude and latitude from satellites. Hence, this is used for tracking cargos and trucks across the country. A new application of this technology is in car navigation. With such a device, you get data on traffic conditions and information on points-of-interest that you pass by, said Mr Amit Kishore Prasad, CEO, SatNav Technologies, a Hyderabad-based GPS firm. In a month's time, international GPS device-maker Garmin will bring its range of GPS devices to India. About 35 different models ranging from Rs 35,000 for a basic model to Rs 1.5 lakh for a high-end model that not only plans routes, but also navigates with voice prompts will be available in the stores, sources said. Garmin's new GPS gadget, the nuvi, is expected to hit Indian stores next month. With data provided by the Oxford University Press, this gadget lets users look up and translate more than 17,000 words or 20,000 phrases in nine languages. Local company SatNav launched SatGuide, a car navigation device at the beginning of this year. This Pocket PC-based (costing Rs 38,000) device has maps for six cities Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and Bangalore. By mid-2006, the company hopes to have information on 14 cities mapped and ready for use in SatGuide. Mr Prasad said he hoped to sell 3,000 units in the first year.
