Mr Jorma Ollila, Chairman and CEO, Nokia
Chennai , March 11 Two of Nokia's suppliers have decided to set up plants at Sriperumbudur, about 50 km west of Chennai, where Nokia today inaugurated its facility to manufacture mobile handsets and telecom network equipment. Nokia hopes that at least 10 of its global suppliers will establish facilities at the Nokia India Telecom Industry Park, located within its Sriperumbudur premises. The two suppliers Aspocomp Group Oyj and Perlos Corporation will together invest $82 million (about Rs 365 crore). The Aspocomp Group will invest about Rs 310 crore in a printed circuit board plant. The Aspocomp's CEO, Ms Maija-Liisa Friman, said at a press conference after the inauguration of Nokia's plant that this would be the first high density interconnections (HDI) printed circuit board plant that would come up in India. The plant was expected to be up and running in the second half of 2007. Perlos, which is a leading supplier of handset mechanics, will invest $12 million (about Rs 55 crore) in a 15,000 sq m plant to be operational by early 2007. It will employ about 1,000 people in the first phase, according to a company official. Nokia's $150 million (about Rs 650 crore) plant, designated a product-specific special economic zone, was inaugurated today by the Finland Prime Minister, Mr Matti Vanhanen, and the Tamil Nadu Governor, Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, in the presence of Mr Jorma Ollila, Chairman and CEO, Nokia, and other officials. Mr Ollila said the plant would help the company to increase its global reach and supply affordable, high quality and easy-to-use mobile phones to an increasingly more diverse and demanding market.
