Internet NIXI appoints arbitrators for `.in' disputes Moumita Bakshi Chatterjee
New Delhi , March 12 In a bid to clamp down on incidents of cyber-squatting in the `.in' domain name registration service, the designated registry, National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), has appointed 11 arbitrators to resolve disputes pertaining to the country code domain. "We have appointed 11 arbitrators ; 29 more applications are pending with us. The arbitrators will take up 13-14 `.in' domain disputes currently before NIXI," sources said. The resolution of disputes that arise out of registration and use of `.in' domain names would happen under the .IN Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (.INDRP). It states that a dispute can arise if a domain name registered by a party is identical or confusingly similar to a name or trademark in which a complainant has a right. Such disputes can also occur when the registrant has no rights or legitimate interests in respect of the domain name; and when a domain name has been registered or is being used in bad faith. It would also extend to acquisition of a domain name for selling it to a competitor (of the complainant) for a consideration. The remedies available include cancellation or transfer of the registrant's domain name.
