Mangalore , March 12

The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy, has said that the State wants to attract more investors to tier-II cities such as Mangalore, Belgaum, Hubli, Gulbarga, Mysore and Hassan.

Speaking at the valedictory of the Corporation Bank's centenary celebrations in Mangalore on Sunday, he said that the development of tier-II cities requires infrastructure of international standards. Special attention has been given for the upgradation of airports at Mangalore, Mysore and Hubli-Dharwad in this matter.

There are also proposals to build airports at Hassan, Gulbarga and Karwar in the State. Work is in progress for the construction of an international airport at Devanahalli in Bangalore.

The railway link between Hassan and Mangalore will be operationalised soon, he said.

The New Mangalore Port has been attracting a good number of cargoes in the past several years. This calls for the development of minor ports such as Karwar and Belekeri with private participation, he said.

THEME CITIES

Mr Kumaraswamy said that theme cities should be built near Bangalore. Seeking the Centre's help in this regard, he said that there is a potential to build IT and health theme cities near Bangalore.

Later, inaugurating the Exim facilitation centre in the premises of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Mangalore, he said that the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, has agreed to lay the foundation stone for the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation's projects in the Mangalore SEZ.

Dr Singh will lay foundation stone for these projects after the completion of Parliament session.

He said that Dakshina Kannada is suitable for the growth of industry and tourism.

In an informal chat with presspersons, Mr Kumaraswamy said that the Karnataka Budget will give importance to rural development and for the development of Bangalore infrastructure.
