`Educate people to remove HIV stigma'

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , March 12

DR Adam Jenney, a well known HIV consultant and campaigner against infectious diseases, has said that the best way to tackle HIV/AIDS is to educate individuals and medical professionals.

"It is education, education and education that will help us tackle stigmatisation," he said.

A Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians, Dr Jenney is touring India on a CII invitation. He was here to take part in a two-day `train the trainer' programme.

Talking to newspersons late on Friday, he said a cure for HIV might not be possible in the near future. "But controlling it is very much possible. People can be brought back to work using medicines. We can improve their quality of life," he said.

Doctors had to ensure that the patients adhere to the effective usage of medicines.

DRUG COSTS

He said that affordability of the medicines was an issue. The patients needed to spend Rs 1,200-Rs 1,800 a month. "The cost of the medicine will come down further," he said.

This could be done if pharmaceutical companies increased their production (of anti-retroviral drugs) and Government gave subsidies. Stating that HIV was a global problem, he said it required global interventions.

Dr K. Venu, Superintendent of Government Chest Hospital, said increased awareness would help check risk behaviour. "This will go a long way in arresting the problem," he said.

"Not all doctors know about the problem and methods to tackle it. Stigmatisation will go through education," he said.
