IT and rural India

The initiative of the Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar, to bridge the gap between urban and rural India is welcome. Before looking to e-agriculture, issues that need to be addressed are basic problems such as credit, marketing, logistics, utilising technology and information flows.

Using IT to sell farm products involves an agricultural e-market, computer-supported auction displays, marketing and commodity information systems and highway automation systems.

This can be taken care of by replicating such initiatives as e-choupal.
