Policy Industry & Economy - Foreign Direct Investment States - Andhra Pradesh Centre clears proposals for 4 biotech parks Our Bureau
Hyderabad , March 13 The Centre has cleared four new biotech parks/ incubators proposed by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to be set up during fiscal 2006-07. These parks/ incubators will come up in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala. In the Budget proposals for the current fiscal, the DBT has allocated Rs 15 crore for creating such facilities. Currently, the Department is implementing a biotech park project in Lucknow and a biotech incubator centre at the Shapoorji Pallonji Biotech Park in Hyderabad. According to the budgetary proposals for the DBT, two more biotech park/ incubator projects for West Bengal and Orissa are under consideration of the Centre. The project in Karnataka would involve the setting up of a biotech incubation centre and common instrumentation facilities at the Biotech Park in Bangalore. In Kochi, the initiative includes bioprocessing and scale up facility, micropropogation, plant extraction, an analytical lab and utility support and design engineering. In Chandigarh, the facility would focus on extraction of medicinal and aromatic plants and agro/food testing and certification. The fourth one in Solan (Himachal Pradesh) would deal with tissue culture, aromatic plants, post harvest management of biofresh fruits and technology aided food processing. The DBT has plans to establish at least 20 biotech parks/incubators in different parts of the country in five years.
