Development of hydrogen technology should be taken up seriously by the countries which do not have sufficient reserves of oil and natural gas, as it is commercially competitive vis-à-vis fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas, according to Dr Tapan Bose, President of the Hydrogen Engine Centre, Canada.
Speaking at the Renewable Energy Summit-2006, he said that India could easily switch over from the use of imported oil to locally produced hydrogen.
Canada is ready to provide appropriate technology to India for the production of the gas. Canada would soon invest about $215 million in hydrogen-based power project, he added.
Dr Bose said that hydrogen was a clean fuel that would help protect the environment and the world from the greenhouse effect.
Moreover, it can be sourced easily from clean coal and from nuclear power plants. It would be easier for India to arrange hydrogen from both sources.
Referring to the Tata group's ambitious plan to set up a one-million-capacity hydrogen fuel-based car project by 2020, Dr Bose wondered how the hydrogen fuel would be procured for such cars.
