Letters Budget concerns
The measures proposed by the Finance Minister in his Budget speech for achieving the ambitious target growth of 10 per cent are necessary but not sufficient. The enhancement in the budgetary provisions to Rs 18,696 crore for Bharat Nirman is appreciable. Further, he could have, at least, considered a tax rate of 30 per cent for people whose income is above Rs 5 lakh. Instead of an allocation of Rs 10 crore for Gandhian institutes, his ideals would be better served through a pro-poor economic policy such as giving a global status Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) into MNCs.
The enhancement to Rs 200 per month of old age pension also deserves appreciation. The agricultural credit concessions in terms of lower interest rate on loans in reality is stressful to the honest farmers who commit suicide for not getting remunerative price for the products in spite of bumper crops. The only cure is remunerative price and not the credit which is the chronic disease in itself. Ignoring the interests of small-scale industry by the FM is not in good taste. M. M. Goel Kurukshetra
