Insurance scheme for Mumbai CNG users

New Delhi , March 14

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, will launch an insurance scheme in Mumbai for auto and taxi drivers using environment-friendly compressed natural gas as fuel.

The Petroleum Minister, Mr Murli Deora, said that under the `Mahasuraksha' insurance scheme, all taxi and auto drivers driving CNG-powered vehicles would be covered against death or permanent disability arising out of accident caused while driving such vehicles.

The objective of the scheme is to promote the use of CNG instead of diesel. In case of any mishap, the nominee would get Rs 1 lakh.

The Government proposes to approach Asian Development Bank for funds to convert the entire transport fleet in Mumbai to CNG. "We want to extend the CNG network beyond Delhi and Mumbai to other cities and also plan to launch similar insurance scheme in other places," Mr Deora said.

He has called a meeting of heads of public sector oil marketing companies on March 19 in Mumbai for taking steps to curb adulteration in fuel.
