Gati launches Chennai to Colombo box service

NEW SERVICE: Gati Coast to Coast, the shipping division of Gati Ltd, has launched a Chennai-Colombo-Chennai weekly container service. — Bijoy Ghosh

Chennai , March 15

Gati Coast to Coast, the shipping division of Gati Ltd, and a cargo movement solution provider, has launched a Chennai-Colombo-Chennai weekly container feeder service.

Every Wednesday, the container vessel, Clarissa, will call the Chennai Container Terminal, according to Mr T. Kumaran, Vice-President, Gati Coast to Coast.

The 250 twenty-foot equivalent unit vessel is carrying 200 containers to Colombo, in its first voyage. The new service will strengthen the company's presence in feeder market in the Bay of Bengal and Andaman seaports. Gati also runs shuttle services from Chennai to Port Blair and Yangon, Myanmar, he said.

According to Mr Ennarasu Karunesan, CEO, Chennai Container Terminal, the private terminal achieves about 30 container moves an hour. In the next couple of weeks, some of the major shipping lines are expected to start regular container service from and to Chennai, he said.
