Bangalore, March 15

Intrusion prevention firm 3Com helped Microsoft patch a `critical' vulnerability in the spreadsheet application Microsoft Excel. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed through 3Com's Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) programme. The vulnerability apparently would have allowed an attacker to take complete control of PCs through Excel. According to the company, once alerted, Microsoft worked quickly to issue a corresponding patch eliminating the threat of an attack.
