Environment States - Maharashtra Maharashtra's power project declared `clean' Our Bureau

Pune , March 15 A 3.75-MW demonstration-based wind power project at Chalkewadi in Satara district, commissioned by the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA), has become the first public sector project that has been identified as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). A statement from MEDA Director-General, Mr Anil Diggkar, said here that this would catalyse the movement towards generating Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). The wind power project will produce around 6,890 CERs. The wind power project is environmentally benign and generates about 8 million units of electricity. The energy is fed into the State grid. It has been estimated that similar capacity project on conventional fuel would have emitted nearly 7,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This gives rise to tremendous pollution causing global warming. The statement said that to reduce this effect it is essential to avoid emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Since carbon dioxide is a large contributor of GHGs and developed countries are main emitters of this gas, a target, through an Internal agreement known as `Kyoto Protocol', has been imposed on the developed countries. The target is of reducing carbon dioxide by 5.2 per cent of 1990 levels. The CDM mechanism is developed for allowing the developed nations to compensate their GHG emissions by way of purchasing CERsfrom eco-friendly projects in developing countries. In this mechanism, one tonne of carbon dioxide mitigated from releasing into atmosphere will generate one CER.
