Strike hits Kochi port operations

Our Bureau

Kochi , March 16

Operations in the Kochi port except in the container terminal have been partially affected on Thursday following the indefinite strike called by the Cochin Port Staff Association in protest against the suspension of five of its office bearers.

The port management has suspended five members of the association including the General Secretary on Wednesday for allegedly disrupting the functions of port offices by carrying out union activities during office hours.

Mr P.M. Mohammed Haneef, Working President of the Association, in a statement issued here said that it is the right of the trade union to carry out its activities in a democratic and legal manner and the action taken by the Port Chairman is unwarranted.

He warned that normalcy would be restored in the port provided the suspension of the union members is withdrawn.

The CITU has also held a rally in support of the strike resorted to by the staff association.
