Shipping Rly link to NMPT likely from April A.J. Vinayak
Mangalore , March 16 The much-awaited railway link to the New Mangalore port is likely to be opened for freight traffic from April 1. Sources in the shipping industry here told Business Line that at a recent meeting, the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) officials had been informed about the likely commissioning of the railway line for freight traffic. The South Western Railway authorities are working out the modalities for the commercial operations of the line from Bangalore to Mangalore, via Hassan. When contacted, an official in the Railways said, "We will start commercial operations on Bangalore-Mangalore railway line soon. We are working out modalities in this regard. Already, 11 trial runs of goods trains have been conducted on the railway line." However, the official did not give a specific date for the commissioning of the railway line for freight operations.
Benefits
The opening up of railway line for freight traffic will help the NMPT a lot, as it can get more hinterland cargo through this line. Iron ore mines in Karnataka are sending around 30 mt of ore to various major ports in the country. The commissioning of railway line will help the NMPT receive around 6 mt of iron ore a year. Iron ore exporters can bring cargo from Bellary-Hospet and Sasanur-Chitradurga regions to theNMPT, through the railway line. Currently, iron ore exporters are bringing the cargo in lorries. In the past, various organisations in the region had protested against the transportation of iron ore cargo through lorries. Their contention was that overloaded iron ore lorries were damaging the roads in the region.
