WORKERS TAKE a nap under the spare tyre of a container lorry parked on the Kochi-Alapuzha National Highway. Tyre manufacturers in the country will import 25,000 tonnes of natural rubber to overcome a perceived shortage.

Imports last fiscal totalled 68,718 tonnes and companies import 44 tonnes of natural rubber for every 100 kg of tyre exported. Tyre production is expected to rise by 9 per cent this fiscal and the sector consumes 54 per cent of the total rubber produced in the country.
