Poultry Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports `Zoning will help contain spread of disease, carry on exports' Our Bureau
Mumbai , March 16 In the wake of an outbreak of avian influenza at Jalgaon in Maharashtra, the poultry industry has sought zoning in a bid to contain the spread of any disease. "We have asked the Government to create zones so that export from disease- free zones could continue,'' said Mr Bharat Tandon, Chairman, Compound Live Stock Feed Manufacturers Association of India. The Government had set up health zones for livestock to ensure that export of meat from foot-and-mouth disease-free zone could continue uninterrupted. The industry is also stepping up bio-security measures at poultry farms, Mr Tandon said. Bio-security measures entail not allowing strangers into farms. Movement from one farm to another is also restricted. Vehicles entering farms are washed with insecticides at entry point. Particular care is taken when entering breeding farms, industry representatives said. The big poultry firms are asking their farmers to put in place stringent bio-security measures, Mr Tandon said. Although the industry claims that bio-security measures have been implemented quite stringently, at the field level there are indications that the birds are placed in unhygienic conditions making it conducive for the spread of diseases. Prices of poultry products continue to remain depressed.
