The first phase of the airport would handle seven million passengers and more than one lakh tonnes of cargo. Project promoters brief CM on progress of work in Hyderabad

Hyderabad , March 16

Exactly a year after Ms Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the National Advisory Council of the UPA Government, laid the foundation stone, the Rs 1,760-crore GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd has announced completion of site preparation works.

Announcing this here at a press conference, Mr Kiran K Grandhi, Managing Director of the airport, said about 15 per cent of work related to the passenger terminal building, which included the ATC (air traffic control) tower, in the last five months.

The GHIAL, a joint venture company promoted by GMR Group and Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad, achieved financial closure in August last. While L&T had won the contract for airside and landside works, China State Construction and Engineering (HK) got the passenger terminal building works.

The GHIAL representatives made a presentation to the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on the milestones achieved at the site and the roadmap.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh and Airports Authority of India own 13 per cent stake each in the project. Dr Rajasekhara Reddy, who had a bird's eye view of the project through a chopper, later told reporters that he was quite satisfied withthe progress of the project.

"They say they can complete the project in November 2007, giving a three-month period for statutory tests and permissions. It will be ready by March 2008," he said.

The first phase of the airport would handle seven million passengers and more than one lakh tonnes of cargo. The ultimate capacity of the airport is over 50 million passengers.

Mr Kiran said the shell of the passenger terminal building, ATC tower and major portion of runway works would be completed during the year. The year would also see finalisation of cargo contracts, maintenance and repair overhaul, fuel farm and other retail concessionaires.
