The Hindu Business Line : `Broadband policy must be TV-centric'

The government must enact a broadband policy which must be television-centric and not computer-centric, according to Dr. Vijay P. Bhatkar, Chairman, Dishnet Wireless Ltd.

Dr Bhatkar, known as one of the architects behind India's Param Super Computer, was speaking at the international `Communcations Convergence' conference titled "Connecting India: The Global Challenge" organised by the Indian Merchants Chamber.

Dr Bhatkar is currently working on a research project for inventing technologies that would help people to interact using their televisions. He said the convergence of telecommunications had many dimensions. It could mean optimised convergence of mediums such as fibre optics, copper wire, coaxial cables, wireless or satellite communications.

Dr F.C. Kohli, the pioneer of the Indian software industry, said it was a matter of serious concern that India was totally focussing on the software industry and neglecting the hardware industry.

India has an annual demand for 15 million PCs, 15 million digital TVs, 30 million to 50 million mobile phones and a large number of electronic controls for various inustrial sectors. But India had not been producing enough micro-electronic engineers, he said.
