New Delhi , March 16 The Government has increased the bird flu surveillance area to a 200 kilometre radius in the States of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra from an earlier level of about 10 km radius. "In a month we have had bird flu in two districts (of Maharashtra), close to each other. So we have developed a more detailed surveillance plan," said Ms Upma Chowdhry, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Animal Husbandry. Ms Chowdhry said surveillance would be carried out in 38 districts over the next two weeks. In all, 75,000 birds would be culled. Culling commenced on Thursday and resulted in destruction of 17,150 birds till 12 noon. Culling operation in the second phase began from 4 p.m. onwards, said an official statement. Compensation has been paid on the spot to the poultry farmers whose birds were culled, it added. The Animal Husbandry Commissioner, Mr S.K. Bandopadhyaya, said Bhopal, where over 5,000 samples are reaching every week, has diverted manpower from other departments to keep pace with testing facility. "We are also contemplating opening five regional testing facilities in Bangalore, Kolkata, Guwahati, Jalandhar and Pune, while a Central facility would be opened at Bareilly," he said.
